If you have a collection of classic iTunes audio files, purchases made over the past two decades, or voice memos synced from your Apple devices, you may want to convert them to MP3. In modern iTunes and Apple Music libraries, most audio tracks are completely DRM-free and can be converted into any universal format.

Historically, Apple defined the standard consumer audio experience by using the MPEG-4 container structure (.m4a) equipped with Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). While technologically superior to the older MPEG-1 Audio Layer III (.mp3), .m4a format files often present significant obstacles when played on older car dashboards, legacy sound workstations, commercial public address frameworks, and regional Indian government portals. In this comprehensive, step-by-step master guide, we review the exact methods to convert your iTunes files.

Understanding DRM Limitations: .m4p vs .m4a Containers

Before attempting conversion within Apple Music or iTunes, you must determine whether your files are wrapped in Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection layers.

  • .m4a (DRM-Free AAC): Any song purchased from the iTunes Store after 2009, files imported from local audio CDs, or audio files recorded with Voice Memos. These can be converted instantly.
  • .m4p (Protected AAC): Purchased files from the older iTunes Store catalog (pre-2009) or offline tracks downloaded directly through an active subscription to Apple Music. Because of copyright restriction keys, these tracks physical files cannot be processed or transcoded by standard local applications or online converters.
  • How to check: In iTunes or Apple Music, right-click the track, select Get Info (or Properties), navigate to the File tab, and inspect the "Kind" field. If it says "Purchased AAC audio file", it is DRM-free. If it says "Apple Music AAC audio file", it is encrypted.

Method 1: Conversion in Apple Music App (Mac Standard)

Mac users with macOS Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, or Sonoma can execute conversions natively without extra software using the default Apple Music app:

  1. Launch the native Apple Music application from your Applications shelf or Spotlight search.
  2. Access the primary Settings console: Go to the system menu bar at the top-left of your screen, click Music, and select Settings... (or use the key-combination Cmd + ,).
  3. Select the tab labeled Files at the top center of the settings dialog.
  4. Click the button named Import Settings... to open Apple's encoder engine properties.
  5. In the Import Using dropdown panel, select MP3 Encoder.
  6. In the Setting dropdown, choose Custom.... To preserve maximum frequency details and ensure transparent conversion, adjust the bitrate slider to 320 kbps, check Use Variable Bit Rate (VBR) Encoding if desired, and set sample rates to 44.100 kHz or Auto. Click OK to confirm.
  7. With configurations active, select the target M4A files in your Library. If the files are on your hard drive but not in the library, go to File > Import... to load them first.
  8. With files highlighted, go to the top system menu and choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version. The Apple Music engine will transcode the files sequentially. The new MP3 versions will appear in your library alongside the original files.

Method 2: Conversion in iTunes for Windows (PC Standard)

If you manage audio pipelines on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the official iTunes application remains the benchmark client:

  1. Download and install the official iTunes desktop client from the Microsoft Store or directly from Apple's support repository.
  2. Go to the top navigation rail, click Edit, and choose the Preferences... option (or press Ctrl + ,).
  3. On the general preferences panel, find the When you insert a CD row and select the Import Settings... action.
  4. Set the encoder interface to MP3 Encoder. Under the quality dropdown, specify High Quality (190-256kbps) or configure a custom 320 kbps limit for pristine acoustics.
  5. Highlight the M4A tracks. Go to the top primary window, select File > Convert > Create MP3 Version. iTunes will transcode the files and save them in the iTunes Media output folder.

Exporting and Organizing the Output MP3 Files

Once iTunes or Apple Music completes the process, finding the physical files on your hard drive is simple. Right-click the newly created MP3 track inside the application grid and select Show in Finder (Mac) or Show in Windows Explorer (Windows).

These tracks are completely standalone and can be copied to Android devices, USB flash drives, backup drives, or uploaded directly to state public service, JEE/NEET education, or biometric portals in India without encountering file compatibility flags.
